New Purse Hanger Style

I stopped making purse hangers a year or so ago because I wasn't happy with the rivets that attached the top pad to the hook; over time they worked loose and the hanger fell apart...not good!

Many people have asked where my purse hanger listings have gone and I have had to tell them I'm not making them anymore...until now. I'm testing out a new design that actually has more rivets. This new design folds so it takes up less space in your purse and the multiple rivets share the weight bearing. So I'm pretty confident this design is more durable than the previous design and should hold up better to constant daily use (being jostled around in the bottom of a purse and holding heavy purses off the ground).

At first I thought the design was a little weird looking, but the more see it I think it looks pretty cute and stylish.

I just love my new business cards! They are small cute and red on the back. How things have changed from the big boring white business cards my Dad used to have.

The front has 8 colorful photo samples of my work and the back has a photo of me taken while on vacation in Santa Fe, New Mexico last September. I only take good photos when I'm on vacation - must be a stress thing :-)

Dichroic Glass Beverage Marker Charms

I really like making these little guys, and enjoy selecting the different colors and patterns so each set is unique. I also make sure each set has very different charms so there are no problems finding your drink!

The beginning of this year has been very slow, so I have been making a few extra sets of charms. It has been so much fun, I have been surrounded by lots of beautiful sparkling cabochons waiting to be chosen. Alas the fun is almost over as I have used most of my pretty little cabs and I'm ready to photograph them all. Recycle and use Recyle

Over the last few months I have been saving bottles. I have a nice selection of Ice Wine, Red Wine, Cordial, Juice and Tea bottles that all have an interesting shape or color.

The bottles started to take up too much space so I now have a mini production line in my basement, a bottle goes in overnight and out the next day, then another bottle goes in overnight....

I melt them into shallow hand made forms to cradle a spoon. I also add more form under the neck of the bottle so it becomes a handle and add decorative wire so it can be hung on a wall while not in use.

The bottle thing all started because of one evening after a happy hour wine or two at the local Irish bar. I decided to rehydrate with a sparkling water and asked if I could take the bottle home because I melt them in my kiln to make spoon rests. I even said I would bring a flattened one to show them. Over several weeks the word spread in the bar to the point where I had promised spoon rests to several people. This past Friday was delivery day and I took several bottles to the bar to distribute to everyone :-)

Now I have delivered the bottles I promised, I'm still in production mode; a bottle goes in the kiln overnight and out the next day, then another bottle goes in overnight....Not every bottle that comes out of the kiln is a winner, some don't flatten completely, or the color is not as vibrant or they just look plain ugly. Luckily for now I'm having a good run, most of my bottles have flattened with very few trapped bubbles and the colors have been amazing. So, if it ain't broke, I'm not going to fix it and I will continue to flattened bottles for reuse until I run out of bottles to recycle!

Today I had my 600th sale on Etsy. Woot, woot!!! What a wild ride! Who knew I could have so much fun selling online and how proud I am to be constantly listing pieces. Kitchen Cabinet door knobs

A few months ago my friend contacted me because she had seen some dichroic glass door knobs and wanted some for her kitchen cabinets. I immediately bought a slew of different colored ripple dichroic glass and made some test samples. The weather started to get better, we both got busy and the plan was put on hold. I did however manage to make a couple of door knobs with glass I want to put in my kitchen one day ;-) These are now on the cabinets in my laundry and they are the nicest things in the whole room!!!!

Then recently Dream-Kitchen-Designs.com mentioned my knobs and it made me think about finishing the cabinet door knob project....I think I need 42 knobs in all!!!!!!!

To keep or sell to a good home

Every now and then I make something that I really, really want to keep. But I have so many pairs of earrings, pendants, plates, clocks and candle holders that I really shouldn't.

I'm not sure how other people feel about what they make, but for me it's my baby for a few days. I see it's transformation from a flat piece of nondescript glass, though a range of shapes and trips to the kiln to it's final form. So by the time a piece is complete it's practically part of the family!

I'll do what I normally do, I'll set it aside and tell myself I can decide later and by then there will probably be something else that that I want to keep :-)

Flatterned Box Design Bottle

I'm becoming green and crunchy; recycle, reuse and reduce as much waste as you can.

I used to think that recycling all my San Pellegrino bottles was good enough. Then I thought it would be better to not buy sparkling water at all. The cost to ship and the number of bottles I drank (I buy by the case from Costco) must increase my carbon footprint.

Giving up SP was a bigger problem than you might expect, I love sparkling water, it settles my stomach, it makes me drink more water and gosh darn it, I just like it. So as a compromise I bought a soda siphon and tried carbonating my own filtered water. It was not the same and I couldn't keep up with my own demand LOL! It is fine for emergencies, but I missed my bottle with lunch.

Also, as I get older the list of things I cannot eat or do gets bigger; lower your calories, cut down on cookies, don't drink so much coffee, reduce your alcohol intake...the list of fun stuff is dwindling. I made a decision that I would go back to buying sparkling water.

Now I buy the larger bottles :-) and I'm trying to reuse them. After some dinking with my kiln and experimentation with molds and slumping forms I have come up with a flattened bottle I like. I have some friends "beta testing" them - that just means I gave them a bottle to see if they like it and they have promised to let me know if there is anything they don't like about it or if I have overlooked a major design issue. Hopefully they will also let me know if they come up with any improvement ideas!!!

I like the idea of using my flattened bottles as sushi plates, so I'm working on wasabi bowls made from small SP bottles. The first couple of experiments have produced very shallow bowls, so I'm trying a completely different process that I hope will work better.

Candle Holders

..........My current creative bubble is making these delicate candle holders. I have been making them using thin strands of glass called stringers. I fuse the glass so the strands merge together to form an open woven look.

By using translucent and opaque glass I end up with colorful candle holders that safely hold a tea light, but also let light and color shimmer and disperse through.

They are quite delicate, but by fusing some cross strands I have come up with a form that is sturdy enough to be handled without too much fear of breaking or cracking when used. Obviousuly like all glass they still need some TLC, just don't drop them :-)

Rings, rings and more rings!

As a member of the Etsy Glass Group we discuss lots of things related to the materials we use and when someone finds something interesting, we share!

Someone found some very nice sterling silver ring findings. Generally I don't like making rings because I hate the findings that are available. But these findings are well made, adjustable and not too bulky. So I splurged and bought quite a few and then spent the next few weeks fusing and grinding lots of tiny pieces of extra sparkly glass. When we all ran out we put in another order and I spent another few weeks grinding and polishing tiny pieces of glass.

I always love it when I get totally sucked into a project and can run with it for weeks. Now I've got that bubble of creativity out I'm ready for something else. That is until I see a ring that inspires me to go back to the pile 'o ring findings I still have :-)

Anklets

I made a necklace similar to some of the bracelets I make; chain with pads that I attach glass to. The necklace didn't work out so well. The glass was too heavy and made the necklace look like a dog chain...and not a very nice one. I kept the necklace for a few months wondering what to do with it and cursed that I had wasted some very cool glass on an experiment that didn't work.

Then one day I saw some anklets on Etsy and a little light bulb lit above my head. I shortened the necklace and made a very nice anklet. The bonus was that I had just enough necklace chain left to make a watch - ha!
Sometimes it just pays to let things sit for a while.

The photo is of my anklet...I had to keep this one, but I did make some more that are listed in my Etsy shop!

I had my 300th transaction on Prizmatic Art's online store - whoohoo! Within seconds of reaching 300 by brother, who lives 5000 miles away and 7 timezones, e-mailed to congratulate me. I wasn't sure whether to be happy or wonder exactly how much time he spends staking out my online store! Anyway, I was happy he noticed and welcomed the chance to celebrate the milestone with someone.

First Etsy Glass Artist Monthy Challenge

This month the Etsy Glass Artists Street Team (EGA) had it's first monthy challenge. This months creative came from the movie Cabaret. The movie can be pretty sad, so I decided to take my interpretation just from the song Cabaret so I could create something happy and fun!

This was my creative reasoning....

Life is a cabaret!
It's a game, a party, it's part of a play, a musical, a dance.
We're a scene in the play of life and your destiny is up to you.
No second chances, don't complain, have some fun!
So do what what lights your candle.
Don't worry about what people think, it's your life, so live it!
Have no regrets!!

It made me think of the e-mail joke that comes around every now and then showing a 90 year old lady sliding through the pearly gates in stilettos, holding a martini screaming wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee that was fun!
The e-mail has a caption something like "this is how I want to go out!"

Having come up with that image I fixated on martinis and tiaras (or dancers headdresses) and how I could glassify that! And having limited skills I had to adapt that into something I could actually make :-)

So I made glitzy martini glass charms that when seen together have a headdress feel.

How I do my pot melts

Some people have asked how I create some of the glass pieces in my plates and jewelry. When I say "Pot Melt" I don't think many people know what I'm talking about. So I thought I'd show how I do a general pot melt.

A mesh melt, or pot melt is where several layers of glass are melted through wire to form an abstract glass pattern.

In this instance I started with a stack of clear and opaque green glass with a couple of pieces of white. The glass stack is about 2.5 cm high, but it's more important that I have enough glass to form an even layer of melted glass at the bottom.

The glass is stacked on a heat tolerant wire mesh with a large plant pot tray underneath. The tray is nothing special, I got this one from home Depot this weekend :-) The wire I use can withstand temperatures of 2200 degrees F. The wire is not galvanized as high temperatures will produce noxious and potentially dangerous (lethal) gases. The pot tray has been treated with a clay solution so that the melted glass will not stick to it.

Nine hours later after reaching 1700 degrees F (925 Celsius) the glass has melted through the wire mesh to form one disk of glass. If there's one thing I have learned with pot melts is that the glass has to be annealed properly and left to cool very, very slowly. When I'm fusing small glass pieces I sometimes vent my kiln when the temperature gets below 500 degrees F, but with a pot melt that can cause the glass to crack. So with pot melts I don't open the kiln until the internal kiln temperature has dropped below 200 degrees F.
The pattern depends on the glass wire placement, the glass used and the order in which the glass is stacked.

The glass can be cut and used for jewelry or kept in one piece and slumped on to a plate or bowl form. I will probably grind the edges of this piece to make a smooth, more regular circle and place it back into the kiln for a fire polish before slumping over a small bowl.

Abstract pot melt pendant

Today I listed one of my favorite pendants in my online Etsy shop .

It's a Mother and Child pendant that was made from a pot melt fusing technique. I used several pieces of blue and green glass with some black glass to form an abstract image similar to that of a baby being swaddled by it's mother. I just love the colors and softness of this pendant.

I have had my Etsy online shop for a year! It's been a wild year, I have learned so much about selling online, developed my style a little further and sold some glass along the way. I have had 255 transactions, which is over 300 individual glass items. Not bad, considering I didn't make a sale until April 2007!

In 2008 I hope to develop some new glass techniques, improve my use of color and sell more variety. I also plan to do craft fairs and shows. I will also continue to try and get some shops to sell my work in the Denver area; I think I just need to find the right product.

As I wander through my artistic travels I will post any news and sales updates to this blog. Year Two - here I come!

Thank you to everyone (Etsians, friends, friends of friends and family) for a very busy holiday season. It was a fun experience that surpassed my expectations. Thank you for your encouragement and orders, and thank you for your understanding when the post office was less than cooperative. I ended the year with 235 sales, something I did not anticipate...my goal was 100!

In 2008 I plan to try some new techniques and to vary and expand my style. And then I hope to find my real style, look, mojo, or whatever it's called! I still feel everything I do is an experiment. If that doesn't change this year, I'll still be happy because I love what I do, but I feel I need to find a place where what I create has more of me in it. So keep an eye on Prizmatic Art in 2008 for some surprising and unique creations! I have lots of ideas milling around in my head!

Sales have subsided on my Etsy site. It's a little weird not to be printing packaging slips and shipping labels each morning. At 1 pm I had a little mail panic. My routine had been to go to the PO before 2 pm and the afternoon rush, but with nothing to ship out I was left with an empty memory of last week's rush. So for the last few days I have been concentrating on some commissioned work, but after Wednesday I'll be able to do whatever I want....that's going to be strange.

I made my 200th sale this morning :-)

I have a large non-Etsy purse hanger order that has reduced my hanger selection, plus I have had another rush on cuff links. I'm so happy that people will be going to parties wearing my dichroic cuff links...I wish by Dad was around to wear a pair of them...they are so much nicer than the links I saw men wear when I was a kid.

I will be adding more hangers and links to my site later today and over the next week.

Bracelet Watches - Watchlets

I really like my bracelet watch, and I get comments about it all the time. I have sold a few on prizmatic.etsy.com but wish I could sell more because I really enjoy making them. All my watches are made with COE 90 dichroic glass that is fused in my professional kiln on 8 hour overnight fuse cycles. I use silver plated chain link that I can adjust to any requested length. I am researching .925 chain link, but so far I have not had any demand for sterling silver. I will continue to make and list the watches on my site.

Cuff Links

I'm having a rally on cuff links...who knew?
When I was a kid my Dad wore them, but in Denver you're more likely to see Bolo ties rather than cuff links. I'm happy the links are selling well, I really enjoy making them, and my very cool brother always sends me e-mails when he sees designs he likes. Guess what the bro is getting for crimbo???

I set up a second store on Etsy for my surplus supplies http://stockpile.etsy.com. I also secured http://www.PrizmaticArt.com, this is set up on Ron's server. The plan is to set up tags on this site and direct people to my Etsy page.

I registered http://www.PrizmaticArt.com/ today.

My friend Ron will host it for free, for now. The understanding is that when I feel I need my own shopping cart I will employ him (lnrconsulting.com) to do the site. I have bags of packing popcorn that Ron needs so that is my initial friendly payment.

One of the reasons I got the domain was so that I could try some search engine optimization using site alt tags and linking. I will never really know if it will make a difference, but any marketing attempt is worth it in my opinion!

100 Sales

After a slow start on Etsy I hit 100 sales today!
I joined Etsy in January 2007 and didn't get a single sale until April 2007. So I'm happy that I reached 100 this year!

I got wholesale access to Aanraku Glass Studios today. I have the power to be dangerous :-)

I'm also considering setting up a supply store online. With the wholesale volumes I could probably sell some of my extra stock.

I sent a brochure to Show of Hands earlier in the week but haven't heard anything from them. I was hoping to sell some of my hangers there. I hope they contact me. I also need to set up a time to meet with people from 5 Green Boxes.

Welcome to my first Prizmatic Art entry. After being laid off from my day job on Sept 14, 2007, I am now paying more attention to my dichroic glass work. I'm hoping to get my work into some stores in Denver and will post that information if that happens.
